Botanical Tulips: Flower bulb of the year 2022

Choose a botanical tulip! This tulip blooms year after year and has been selected as the bulb of the year for 2022.

Dwarf Tulip, Botanical Tulip, Wild Tulip

The botanical tulip is something very special in the tulip family. That's why it has many nicknames. These are small, delicate tulips, which is why they are also called dwarf tulips. In addition to their small height, they are also recognizable by their star-shaped flowers. Another difference from "ordinary" tulips is that the bulbs multiply underground. This means they continuously produce new bulbs, allowing you to enjoy new blooming flowers each year. Many wild tulips are true pioneers, as they bloom particularly early in the spring. Some wild tulips even bloom as early as February.

Nectar Provider Early in the Spring

Few flowers bloom in early spring, but they are important food sources for bees and butterflies. Because many botanical tulips bloom early and produce a relatively large amount of pollen and nectar, they make a significant contribution to biodiversity in the garden. Moreover, the nectar of wild tulips is easily accessible to insects, such as bees and butterflies, due to the widely open star-shaped petals. The appeal of botanical tulips to these small but important insects is enormous. They love it!

Planting Botanical Tulips

The best time to plant botanical tulips is in the fall before the frost. These are strong flowers that are resistant to weather and wind. Wild tulips thrive in various spots in the garden, in flower pots, and rock gardens. The most important thing is that they receive sunlight. Place the bulbs in the ground with the point facing up. Plant the bulbs about three times as deep as the bulb is high. Let the leaves die back naturally after flowering. The bulbs of wild tulips draw their strength for the next bloom from the dead petals and can store these reserves in the bulb.

Different Types of Wild Tulips

Dwarf tulips come in all colors except blue. Tulip tarda is especially known for its (cream-white) flowers. Tulip Linifolia and Tulip praestans Fusilier both have bright red flowers. Tulipa 'Shogun' and Tulipa 'batalinii bright gem' are highly recommended for lovers of orange and yellow tulips. Planning something special?
